Revenge of the Judoon (Doctor Who: Quick Reads, #3) by Terrance Dicks (Review)

The TARDIS brings the Doctor and Martha to Balmoral in 1902. Here they meet Captain Harry Carruthers - friend of the new king, Edward VII. Together they head for the castle to see the king - only to find that Balmoral Castle is gone, leaving just a hole in the ground. The Doctor realises it is the work of the Judoon - a race of ruthless intergalactic mercenary space police.

While Martha and Carruthers seek answers in London, the Doctor finds himself in what should be the most deserted place on Earth - and he is not alone.

With help from Arthur Conan Doyle, the Doctor and his friends discover a plot to take over the world. With time running out, who will fall victim to the revenge of the Judoon?

Featuring the Doctor and Martha as played by David Tennant and Freema Agyeman in the acclaimed hit series from BBC Television.

I GIVE THIS BOOK:1 star1 star1 star1 star

MY THOUGHTS:
This was such a fun read! I have recently discovered the Doctor Who quick reads, and this is only the second one I've read, but I really enjoy them. They're so easy to read in one sitting, almost like watching an episode. :)

Historical people are brought in a characters in the story and they really play no real point in it - their "parts" could have been filled by anyone and it would have served the same purpose.

I liked that Martha actually dressing in a period outfit, she normally doesn't and I've always wanted her too.

I loved many parts of Revenge of the Judoon, but there wasn't much to the story. However, it still brought a smile to my face and made me laugh several times so I think it very much deserves a four star.

I would recommend this book to any Whovian.

Peacemaker by James Swallow (Review)

The peace and quiet of a remote homestead in the 1880s American West is shattered by the arrival of two shadowy outriders searching for 'the healer'. When the farmer refuses to help them, they raze the house to the ground using guns that shoot bolts of energy instead of bullets...

In the town of Redwater, the Doctor and Martha learn of a snake-oil salesman whose patent medicines actually cure his patients. But when the Doctor and Martha investigate they discover the truth is stranger, and far more dangerous.

Caught between the law of the gun and the deadly plans of intergalactic mercenaries, the Doctor and Martha are about to discover just how wild the West can become...

The Doctor and Martha are about to find out if a sonic screwdriver is more powerful than a six-shooter - the latest in the bestselling series of Doctor Who novels.

I GIVE THIS BOOK:1 star1 star1 star1 star

MY THOUGHTS:
This was a fun read. I was a little worried that I wouldn't enjoy the story, since it takes place in the Wild West, but I needn't have worried. The story was very entertaining and, as with all DW novels, a fast read.

The characterization of the Doctor and Martha were spot on in my opinion. I was able to picture everything they did as though the actors playing them were doing it, which is something I love.

The only thing I didn't care for was the weird way the western people spoke. I've read many novels with characters from the west in the 1800s and none had them speak this way. This wasn't a huge thing, though it's probably the main reason I'm only giving it four stars instead of five.

If you love watching Doctor Who you'll love reading Peacemaker.

The Sontaran Games (Doctor Who: Quick Reads #4) by Jacqueline Rayner (Review)

But is one of them driven enough to resort to murder? The Doctor discovers that the students have been hushing up unexplained deaths. Teaming up with a young swimmer called Emma, the Doctor begins to investigate - but he doesn't expect to find a squad of Sontarans invading the academy! As the Sontarans begin their own lethal version of the Globe Games, the Doctor and Emma must find out what's really going on. But the Doctor is captured and forced to take part in the Sontaran Games. Can even a Time Lord survive this deadly contest? Featuring the Doctor as played by David Tennant in the acclaimed hit series from BBC Television.

I GIVE THIS BOOK:
1 star1 star1 star1 star

MY THOUGHTS:
The Sontaran Games takes the Doctor to an academy where people train for the Globe Games, which are similar to the Olympics. However, as usual, as soon as he arrives there's trouble that he had to stop and a mystery he has to solve.

This was a fun and quick read. It's the first Doctor Who quick book I've read, but I will definitely be giving the other ones like it a try.

Recommended if you love Doctor Who and are looking for something light to read really quickly.

Doctor Who: The Nightmare of Black Island by Mike Tucker (Review)

On a lonely stretch of Welsh coastline, a fisherman is killed by a hideous creature from beneath the waves. When the Doctor and Rose arrive, they discover a village where the children are plagued by nightmares, and the nights are ruled by monsters. The villagers suspect that ancient industrialist Nathanial Morton is to blame, but the Doctor has suspicions of his own. Who are the ancient figures that sleep in the old priory? What are the monsters that prowl the woods after sunset? What is the light that glows in the disused lighthouse on Black Island? As the children's nightmares get worse, the Doctor and Rose discover an alien plot to resurrect an ancient evil...

I GIVE THIS BOOK:
1 star1 star1 star1 star

MY THOUGHTS:
The Nightmare of Black Island was a fun & interesting story and another great installment to the Doctor Who: New Series Adventures. I loved the interactions between the Doctor & Rose, they were done very well, and the way the Doctor behaved was almost spot on - there were a couple of things he did that just didn't seem right. The monsters in this book were quite terrifying, the idea was just so scary, I just loved it!

If you're a fan of Doctor Who, especially the tenth incarnation, I think you'd really enjoy reading The Nightmare of Black Island. I know I did :)

The Many Hands by Dale Smith (Review)

The Nor' Loch is being filled in. If you ask the soldiers there, they'll tell you it's a stinking cesspool that the city can do without. But that doesn't explain why the workers won't go near the place without an armed guard. That doesn't explain why they whisper stories about the loch giving up its dead, about the minister who walked into his church twelve years after he died. It doesn't explain why, as they work, they whisper about a man called the Doctor. And about the many hands of Alexander Monro.

Featuring the Doctor and Martha as played by David Tennant and Freema Agyeman in the hit series from BBC Television.

I GIVE THIS BOOK:
1 star1 star1 star1 star1 star

MY THOUGHTS:
This was such a great DW story! I loved how every action by both the Doctor and Martha fit perfectly with their on-screen personas. Every time the Doctor was saying something or doing something in the book it was very easy to read it in David Tennant's voice and visualize him acting that way, which is so nice.

The monsters in the story were super creepy and not at all what I thought they were going to be. There were so many funny lines, that I was smiling so often it was ridiculous.

I loved that the story took place in Scotland, and when it said the Doctor had a Scottish accent I was hearing the accent David used in the episode Tooth and Claw.

Fans of Doctor Who should love reading The Many Hands - I know I did! :)

Beautiful Chaos by Gary Russell (Review)

Donna Noble is back home in London, catching up with her family and generally giving them all the gossip about her journeys. Her grandfather is especially overjoyed - he's discovered a new star and had it named after him. He takes the Doctor, as his special guest, to the naming ceremony.

But the Doctor is suspicious about some of the other changes he can see in Earth's heavens. Particularly that bright star, right there. No not that one, that one, there, on the left...

The world's population is slowly being converted to a new path, a new way of thinking. Something is coming to Earth, an ancient force from the Dark Times. Something powerful, angry, and all-consuming...

I GIVE THIS BOOK:
1 star1 star1 star1 star

MY THOUGHTS:
The start of this story brought to mind the sad scene at the end of Journey's End, when the Doctor was left all on his own. However, then the story goes back in time to a time when Donna & the Doctor are visiting her family - I loved that! How we get to see so much more of what Donna's family was like and the last chapter in the book was so touching and sweet - any fan if Donna Noble should be deeply moved by it.

Recommended to fans of Doctor Who.

Touched by an Angel by Jonathan Morris (Review)

'The past is like a foreign country. Nice to visit, but you really wouldn’t want to live there.'

In 2003, Rebecca Whitaker died in a road accident. Her husband Mark is still grieving. Then he receives a battered envelope, posted eight years ago, containing a set of instructions and a letter with a simple message: "You can save her."

Later that night, while picking up a takeaway, Mark glances at a security monitor - to see himself, standing in the restaurant in grainy black and white. And behind him there's a stone statue of an angel. Covering its eyes, as though weeping... except, when Mark turns, there's nothing there. As Mark is given the chance to save Rebecca, it's up to the Doctor, Amy, and Rory to save the world. Because this time the Weeping Angels are using history itself as a weapon...

A thrilling, all-new adventure featuring the Doctor, Amy, and Rory, as played by Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and Arthur Darvill in the spectacular hit series from BBC Television.

I GIVE THIS BOOK:1 star1 star1 star1 star

MY THOUGHTS:
One of my favorite Doctor Who episodes is Blink, the Weeping Angels are the show's scariest villains, so when I saw this book I was really excited to read it! The Doctor, Amy and Rory all came across as themselves and I could easily visualize each of the actors saying the things in the book. I laughed several times with the things the Doctor said and did - I could picture Matt Smith doing those things and it was HILARIOUS!!! The ending was a bit dull, but overall the story moved along at a great pace and kept my attention throughout. I would definitely recommend this book to any Doctor Who fan - it was very enjoyable!
