AND NOW...THE FIRST CHAPTER:

Opening Thoughts

May all who search for you

be filled with joy and gladness.

May those who love your salvation

repeatedly shout, “The LORD is great!”

Psalm 40:16 (NLT)

Whether you know it or not, you’re on a quest. Perhaps you sense an emptiness, a vacuum, or a nagging hole inside. Filling it with excitement, money, or love just doesn’t do the trick. Maybe you feel contented with your life today, but suspect that something else, something deeper, awaits you. Either way, you’re on a quest—a quest for Christ.

What is a quest? It is simply a journey toward a worthy goal, the seeking of a noble end. There’s a catch, though. Something as significant as the search for God is bound to run into obstacles and challenges. I have faced them, and I’m sure you have too.

This devotional is for all who are on a spiritual journey with Christ. Through its pages, you will trace your steps from the first whispers of faith to resting in God’s arms. You may be miles along the road, or you may be just beginning. Regardless of where you are on the journey, your story is sacred—a saga that leads ultimately to the one true God.

During this process, I’ll invite you into my personal faith journey. Each chapter features snippets from my story. Because I’ve selected just a few snapshots from a lifetime of experience, many significant people, places, and events are not included. My hope is that the ones I have chosen will lead you to a deeper reflection on your own memories. I’ve also provided thought-provoking questions, scripture meditations, and special prayers to help you see ever more clearly the transforming grace of God in your life. At the end of each chapter, you’ll have a chance to write your own personal prayer.

As we explore this quest together, reflect on the stages you’ve passed through. They may not exactly parallel my own, but the similarities could be astonishing. You may have experienced some of the phases, but not all. Perhaps they occurred in a different order. Maybe some of your stages aren’t included in this book. Don’t worry; this devotional book is only a guide for your journey. As you work through it, you’ll see God’s hand in your life and the direction he is leading you.

Why would you want to chart your personal faith journey? Because your spiritual story is significant. Who you are makes a difference. God ordained this path for your life even before the dawn of creation. It matters to you. It matters to me. In fact, it matters to the whole community of faith, both now and forever. The impact of your life is incalculable.

As you begin to explore your personal quest for Christ, take a minute to reflect on this scripture passage. Listen for God’s message to you.

The Kingdom of Heaven is like a pearl merchant

on the lookout for choice pearls.

When he discovered a pearl of great value,

he sold everything he owned and bought it!

Matthew 13:45-46 (NLT)

When we find the treasure we have been seeking for so long, it changes our lives. We hold it close, vowing never to let it go. As we begin to map our quest for the pearl of infinite value, let us join in prayer, asking for God’s guidance and steady hand on our journey.

Gracious God, you are the missing piece in our lives, the pearl we seek. For years, we have looked high and low for you. We’ve searched in every imaginable place. But you’ve been with us all along, urging us forward, shepherding us into your flock. Stay with us as we tell our stories and map our spiritual quests. Keep us safe as we continue to seek you on the journey of life, today and always. Amen.

I wish you a fruitful walk filled with joy and wonder, discovery and delight.

Lisa

Chapter 1

Birthing

The LORD called me before my birth;

from within the womb he called me by name.

Isaiah 49:1 (NLT)

“Hey—it’s freezing cold out here. And what’s with the bright lights and noise? Everything was nice and peaceful until a minute ago!”

No doubt about it, birth is a shock to our tiny bodies! We burst onto the scene, often to great fanfare and festivity. Soon the excitement is over, and our overwhelmed and bewildered parents find themselves alone with a little one to nurture and guide. It’s a daunting task for all!

The journey to Christ begins on the day of our birth. Some of us are born into warm, loving homes. Some are not. Some families are Christian. Some are not. They may be rich or poor, large or small, spiritually strong or emotionally damaged. In every situation, God tenderly holds each new life in his hand.

My Story

The stained glass window sparkled behind my long white baby dress. Back then, baptism seemed like the socially correct thing to do. So my parents arranged a ceremony at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C., even though they weren’t particularly interested in Christianity.

Dad was drafted soon after I was born, and the Army assigned him to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C. Later, after finishing his studies at the Mayo Clinic, he became a brain surgeon in Wyoming. But alcohol, drugs, violence, and mental illness ravaged our family and tarnished my young soul.

Ultimately, my parents divorced and our comfortable lifestyle vanished. Mother moved the four kids to Colorado and re-married. Life felt disconnected and relationships were strained. Necessities like toilet paper were sometimes hard to come by. Rats lived in the kitchen. Each day brought its own challenge.

* * * * *

From the moment of our birth, God has a faith journey in mind for each of us. Sometimes he gives us a head start by placing us in a Christian family. But even when we grow up clearly outside the realm of faith, he sets a path for us to make the journey back to him.

All of us begin our trek as a blank slate, waiting for the finger of God to write a beautiful story with our lives. He calls us by name from the beginning, no matter how far we must walk to meet him again. He honors the struggle of redemption in every single life.

Your Story

How would you describe the household where you grew up?

What were some good things about your childhood?

Describe the challenges you and your family faced.

Did you have any early childhood religious experience? What was it?

Reflections

We don’t randomly appear at our birth for no reason. God himself created us at this particular time to fulfill his unique purpose. Consider your life as you ponder this verse:

Long ago, even before he made the world,

God loved us and chose us in Christ

to be holy and without fault in his eyes.

Ephesians 1:4 (NLT)

How can you tell that you are chosen by God?

What other thoughts do you have about birthing?

Give It to God

Before I drew my first breath and opened my eyes to the light, you knew me by name. In the comfort of the womb, you created and formed me for your special purpose. Be with me as I explore my story and trace my spiritual journey. Help me follow the path marked out for me. As I face the challenges ahead, guide me with your loving hand.

Your Special Prayer

Take just a moment to express your thoughts and heart to God.

Queen of the Waves by Janice Thompson (Review)

When pampered Jacqueline Abington secretly elopes with the family gardener, she asks another woman to take her place on the much anticipated maiden voyage of the Titanic. Tessa Yarborough hails from a poor corner of London but has been granted the opportunity of a lifetime--a ticket to sail to America aboard a famed vessel. But there's a catch: she must assume Jacqueline's identity. For the first time in her life, Tessa stays in luxurious quarters, dresses in elegant gowns, and dines with prestigious people. Then a wealthy American man takes an interest in her, and Tessa struggles to keep up the ruse as she begins falling for him. When tragedy strikes, the game is up, and two women's lives are forever changed.

I GIVE THIS BOOK:1 star1 star1 star1 star

MY THOUGHTS:
Queen of the Waves was a very enjoyable book. I loved all the details this book provided about the Titanic and life in general at that time, while at the same time it didn't bog down the story with too many details - it was just right!

Tessa, Jacquie and Iris were such enjoyable characters. Tessa was probably my favorite character in the book, but I loved Nathan too - he was a wonderful and sweet character. I would recommend this book.

During the next few months, Josh struggles with his faith, Beth hides a secret that may destroy their marriage. She also discovers a decades-old connection to Dr. Abrams that could change his life forever.

I GIVE THIS BOOK:1 star1 star1 star

MY THOUGHTS:
First off, let me say contemporary fiction is not one of my favorite genres. However, this book sounded intriguing to me, so I decided to read it.

The Road to Mercy was good not great. While reading the book it kept my attention, but when I had to set it down I didn't want to rush back to it. The story was at times predictable and the ending left much to be desired, but overall, I think it is a nice debut novel.

Even though this book didn't wow me, if the synopsis sounds like something you would enjoy, I think you should give it a try.

The Bride Wore Blue by Mona Hodgson (Review)

Headed toward a fresh start but tethered by her past, Vivian longs to break free, to find forgiveness and love.

At last, the sisters are reunited! The youngest Sinclair, the family “baby”, is moving from Maine to Cripple Creek, Colorado and joining Kat, Nell, and Ida. But Vivian is a young woman with a will of her own, and made some decisions back in Portland that have begun to haunt her. Will she be able to live up to the expectations of her three perfect and now happily-settled sisters?

The sisters warmly welcome Vivian to the mountain west, but the wild-and-woolly mining town isn’t ripe with opportunities for a respectable young woman. The youngest Sinclair sister is determined to make her own way, so when she’s offered a job as a hostess in a sporting house, she takes it, thinking the position is appropriate for a tainted, unlovable woman like herself. Although she’s convinced she’ll never be asked to entertain privately, Vivian keeps her employment a secret from her sisters, knowing they’d be mortified—as will Carter Alwyn, the kind and godly sheriff ’s deputy who’s sweet on her.

Vivian is descending into a life of secrets, lying to the very people who love her and could help her heal from her mistakes. Will an outpouring of grace remind her that she is still God’s beloved and that her past can be washed as clean as Rocky Mountain snow?

I GIVE THIS BOOK:1 star1 star1 star1-1/2 stars

MY THOUGHTS:
The Bride Wore Blue is another enjoyable installment to The Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek series, and my favorite of the series to date. I hope to read Twice a Bride, the fourth book in this series, very soon.

Vivian may be the baby of the family, but after making a grievous mistake the previous year, she has done a lot of growing up. I thought she was such a believable character, and I felt an immediate connection with her.

Shortly after Vivian arrives in Cripple Creek she begins to look for employment. However the town has recently suffered a fire and most of the local businesses have just rebuilt, so there are very few jobs available. She is told about a job as a hostess and thinks that is something she could do...that is until she learns it is in one of the sporting houses. However, when she loses one job, has to leave another and can't find work anywhere no matter how hard she tries, she decides to see what would be involved in that hostess job. When she is told that she wouldn't have to work upstairs, she decides to take it - thinking that it isn't that big of a deal to work there after what she did last year. Knowing that her family would never understand or condone her decision, she keeps her place of employment a secret from them...even going to great lengths to deceive one of her sisters when she comes across her on her way to her job.

The Bride Wore Blue is a wonderful story. I think this book could be read be itself and you wouldn't feel that you are missing out on anything. However, just know that if you did read this one first, and then decided to read the other two, that you would know a lot of the key details of those books and that may take away a little of your enjoyment of them. I would recommend this book and this series to fans of historical fiction.

Blog Tour: The Love of Divena by Kay Marshall Strom (Guest Post & Giveaway)

Face to Face With Slavery

By Kay Marshall Strom

My latest book, The Love of Divena, is fiction set in fact.

On my first trip to India, I met a couple I’ll call Ajit and Jaya. Both came from the lowest rung of India’s social ladder—Dalits. Outcastes formerly known as Untouchable. Both had spent their entire lives working in a local landlord’s fields.

Ajit’s family belonged to the landowner because many years earlier, in a time of desperation, his grandfather borrowed a few rupees from the landowner’s grandfather, agreeing to work off the debt. The landowner’s grandfather credited Ajit’s family for their work, but he charged an outrageous amount to rent a small hut and buy a few handfuls of rice. Because only landlords could read and write, they made certain that for each generation, the family’s indebtedness grew and grew until it could never be paid off. Ajit was doomed from birth to spend his life working in the landlord’s fields. From dawn to sundown every day, under the blistering sun or in monsoon floods.

Both Ajit and Jaya were bonded laborers, entrapped in the most widespread form of slavery today. In India alone, 10 million people are enslaved for generations in the same way.

Jaya was thirteen years old when her father married her to Ajit. Every day she got up long before the sun, built a fire and cooked rice, then headed to the fields at dawn. She knew no other life. And whenever the landlord looked upon her with pleasure and told her to stay behind while the others went to the fields, she screamed inside, but she always stayed. She had no choice. He owned her.

But one day Ajit stepped between his wife and the landlord. “No, she will not stay behind with you,” he said. The landlord had Ajit beaten, but Ajit would not back down. The landlord refused them rice, but Ajit and Jaya said they would rather starve. When they managed to sneak away in the middle of the night, the furious landowner sent his thags to hunt them down and drag them back.

But God’s hand was on Ajit and Jaya. They stumbled into a village of freed bonded laborers who hid them. The landlord expected his men to beat a sobbing woman and her cowering husband into submission. Instead, his thags were met by more than 100 freed slaves armed with clubs and knives.

“A village of people like us?” Ajit asked in disbelief. “How can you survive?”

“We got a micro-loan to start a dairy,” one woman explained. “We all have jobs to do.”

The village women had done so well with the dairy that they started their own bank so that they could lend money to others who wanted to start businesses. Like Ajit and Jaya. Today the couple sells vegetables they grow on their own small plot of land. And they are fast paying back their loan.

“We are not slaves anymore,” Jaya told me. “And we never will be again!”

Actually, The Love of Divena is fact. It’s just framed in fiction.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
In this final book of the Blessings in India trilogy, Divena struggles against an entire culture to proclaim a faith close to her heart while rocking the world of two families.

India 1990. In the final book of the Blessings of India series, Shridula, old and stooped at fifty-nine, makes her painful way to pay homage to the elephant god Ganesh, lord of success and destroyer of evils and obstacles. “Why are we Hindus instead of Christians?” her seventeen-year-old granddaughter Divena asked.
“Because we are Indian,” said Shridula.

So begins a spiritual journey for Divena as she struggles against an entire culture to proclaim a faith close to her heart while rocking the world of two families.
